1 Timothy 5:3
King James Version
3 Honour widows
that are widows indeed.
How must widows live?
How are they to conduct themselves?
These we came to know.
1 Timothy 5:4
King James Version
4 But if any widow have children or nephews,
let them learn first to shew piety at home,
and to requite* their parents:
for that is good and acceptable before God.
1 Timothy 5:5
King James Version
5 Now she that is a widow indeed,
and desolate**,
trusteth in God,
and continueth in supplications and prayers
night and day.
In SUMMARY, widows must:
learn first to shew piety at home
requite* their parents
be desolate**
trusteth in God
continueth in supplications and prayers night and day
*What does "requite" mean?
We turn to three Bible versions for clarity:
1 Timothy 5:4
Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, see to it that these are first made to understand that it is their religious duty [to defray their natural obligation to those] at home, and make return to their parents or grandparents [for all their care by contributing to their maintenance], for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
1 Timothy 5:4
Easy-to-Read Version
4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, the first thing they need to learn is this: to show their devotion to God by taking care of their own family. They will be repaying their parents, and this pleases God.
1 Timothy 5:4
Expanded Bible
4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to ·do their duty to [or practice their piety/godliness toward] their own ·family [household] and to repay their parents or grandparents. [L For] That pleases God.
**What does "desolate" mean?
Someone left all alone, living by herself.
She must TRUST in GOD.
What not to be:
1 Timothy 5:6
King James Version
6 But she that liveth in pleasure
is dead while she liveth.
The objective?
1 Timothy 5:7
King James Version
7 And these things give in charge,
that they may be blameless.
